Summer Moving Tips

Planning on moving before the end of summer? Well you’re not alone, summer is the busiest time of year for Portland Movers, this is according to the American Moving and Storage Association. If you’re planning to use a Portland Moving company, you should call as soon as possible. Most companies will need plenty of notice, they may be booked for at least six weeks or even more if you’re planning on moving a long distance.

Moving almost always takes longer than you originally plan for. Maybe you want to make some changes to your new home before you move in. For instance, maybe you need to re-paint some walls, put new carpeting in the den or refinish the hardwood floors in the kitchen. It is a good idea to plan ahead and get things done BEFORE you move in. That way your furniture and things are not sitting in your way. Another good idea is to allow for some overlap between the closing of your new home and the last day of the lease on your current residence.

Take a look around your place, there’s no sense moving things you don’t need or want anymore. We all know how hard it is to let go of certain items, especially if they have sentimental value. Try to discard anything that is obviously beyond repair or not worth fixing. Have a yard sale to get rid of anything else that may not work in your new home. If you don’t have enough things for your own garage sale, talk to your neighbors and have a group sale. This is a good way to get rid of unwanted stuff and maybe even make a few bucks. After the garage sale, load any unsold items into your car right away and take them to the donation center of your choice.

Don’t forget to pack a box of essentials items in your own car like a telephone, a few changes of clothes, some pots and pans, dishes, silverware, toiletries, medications and anything else you might need to get you through the first few days in your new place. Your Portland Moving Company should be on time but if they are late, there might be items that you can’t live without. If you work from home and need your computer, be sure to pack that in your car as well. Also pack any important valuables like jewelry and other small things along with you if you have room. As for large valuables like artwork and electronics, be sure and note all these things on the movers inventory form in case of damage or loss and write down all the model numbers ans serial numbers of your electronics on a separate piece of paper and keep all the owners manuals with you as well. Another good thing to make note of are any important numbers and contacts, like your mover’s number and the shipment registration number. You might need to call your mover and check on the shipment or some other reason, and then those notes and numbers will come in handy.
